Summertime travel tips: beat the heat

Summer is a great season to go traveling, but the hot weather could make you feel tired at times. Here are some summertime travel tips: beat the heat to help you stay cool during your holiday or short trip. If you stay on the safe side, your vacation will be that much more enjoyable.

Drink water and tea
Keep hydrated at all times by drinking water. Try to take a bottle of water with you wherever you go, especially on a long day trip. Herbal teas will also keep your body cool, and you can add a few slices of cucumber or lemon to spice things up. However, you should avoid carbonated drinks as well as caffeine. Sodas and coffee will only make you more thirsty without helping much with hydration.

Wear light clothing
When you are on vacation, you should drop the tight tank tops and opt for airy materials instead. Cotton and silk are good suggestions, as well as any other natural fibers. Wear loose clothing whenever possible in order to allow your body to breathe. If you can, wear a sun hat or a cap as to avoid getting a sunburn.

Use a good sunscreen
You should never leave on vacation without a bottle of sunscreen. The higher the SPF, the more protected you will be against the hot sun. This means you will also feel cooler and avoid getting sunburned within the first days. Search for SPF 15 or higher, and use it all over your body twice a day. Buy separate lotions for your body and face, as these mostly come in different packaging.

Choose your activities wisely
The afternoon hours are the hottest wherever you go. If you plan a trip or excursion, it is generally best to leave before 10 am as to avoid the heat peak. Evening activities should be scheduled after 7 pm, when the sun sets and its strength diminishes. If you like playing outdoor sports, make sure to take it easy and not overdo it. In addition, you should avoid going to the beach between 12 pm and 5 pm. The beach chairs should feature umbrellas that will protect you from the heat.

Eat something spicy
Spicy food keeps your body temperature on the lower side, which will cool you off during the day. Many exotic restaurants add spices on the food, so check out the ones at your hotel. Chewing minty gum also helps and it is easy to buy a pack from any small shop. You may sweat more but you will also feel a lot more refreshed.

Freeze your water
Keep your bottled water in the freezer overnight and take it with you in the morning. Beside drinking it, you can also spray some on your wrists and neck. This will provide an instant refreshing feeling which allows you to breathe better. If things get too heated, throw some water over your head and get relief. Don't wait until you are thirsty to sip on some liquids, and remember to drink about 1 liter of water a day.
